Archived from groups: alt>autos>toyota>trucks (more info?)

My 1988 Toyota 4X4 pickup with the 22RE engine makes a low growling type
noise in 3rd and 5th gears when I apply the gas. The noise stops when I take
my foot off the accelerator. I just bought this truck and am concerned that
the noise indicates transmission problems. I drained and replaced the
transmission fluid, and the noise is still there when I accelerate.

Any thoughts or suggestions from this group?

Thanks,

Robert

Betcha it's gonna be the input shaft bearing. Just did my 84 with the same
symptoms. Might as well do the clutch while you're in. Probably 500-750
bucks.

The local Toyota dealer has quoted me $2,500.00 to replace the clutch and
the transmission. Seems awfully high to me.
