For a 1982 Toyota Tercel (made in July '82), I have destroyed the
lower caliper bolt on the front left wheel. I bought a temporary bolt
(8mm x 1.25 x 60mm, #5) from Lowe's and modified it be the same length
as the upper bolt. Since the original bolt is a harder bolt (#6), I
went to the Toyota dealer to get a replacement. Upon giving them my
VIN number, I am told that there are two different lengths for the
caliper bolts on the front wheels. On top on that, they no longer
manufactured the lower bolt.

So two questions:

1. How long is the lower bolt supposed to be?

2. Which bolt should be shorter?

If the 8 x 60 x 1.25 fits, then it is the right size. I suggest this is
probably a place for a Grade 8 instead of a Grade 5.

You have the right bolt, it's just screwed up. The portion you are concerned
with ought not be hosed up too badly, so you can match it and move on.
